Is a picturesque village with a population of approx. 1000 at 2010. Pyrgos is approximately 7km away from the island"s capital Fira. It is built on a hill that offers magnificent views of Santorini in almost all directions. On top of this hill remain the ruins of a Kasteli – an old Venetian fortress - that was once the island"s administrative center.
Pyrgos is a typical example of medieval architecture with narrow, labyrinthine streets, fortified walls and hidden passages. Nowadays, is one of the “hidden secrets” on Santorini – especially the old taverna right at the central square. From Pyrgos you climb up to Profiti Elias in about 1 hours – the highst spot on the island, on the top there is an old monastery (only a very nice yard with a fantastic view of all the island is open to the public) and an army base, which is completely closed to the public.
