Thira

Historic Thira

The capital of the island of Santorini at the edge of collapsed caldera.

Thira is the modern capital of  Santorini. It is a traditional settlement. "Firá", actually, is a different pronunciation of "Thíra", the ancient name of the island itself.

Fira is a city of white-washed houses built on the edge of the 400 m high caldera  on the western edge of the semi-circular island of Thera. The two main museums of interest are the Santorini Archeological Museum, 30 m east of the cable car entrance, and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera at the southeast corner of the White Orthodox Cathedral, built on the site of the Ypapanti Church, destroyed in the 1956 earthquake.

Access to Fira is mainly by roads on its eastern side, or hiking from its port via the narrow winding donkeypath on foot or on donkeys, or – since th 1980ies - by riding the Doppelmayer cable car. The central square of Thira has the main bus and taxi station, banks and pharmacies.

100`s of souvenir shops, jewelry shops, restaurants and ice cream windows are connecting the cable car station and the central square. Big cruiseliners can be seen anchoring just for a day. Modern ferries are using the new harbor of Athinios Port – connected to the very good modern streetnetwork of the island.

The view from Fira is magnificent, from Akrotiri to Oia, plus the volcanic island Nea Kameni at the center with Thirassia.
